Care for cardiomyopathy in San Antonio
Experienced cardiology specialists at Methodist Healthcare can help diagnose, manage and treat patients with cardiomyopathy symptoms. Our priority for this condition is care and treatment to avoid heart failure or the need for a transplant.
What is cardiomyopathy?
Often an inherited condition, cardiomyopathy causes weakness in the heart muscle. The walls of the heart chambers can either be stretched and thin or thickened or stiff. This can lead to heart failure as the body is unable to receive blood from the heart. Treatment can help avoid heart failure, but some patients with cardiomyopathy may eventually require a heart transplant.
Symptoms of cardiomyopathy can include:
- Rapid or fluttering heartbeat
- Tiredness or fatigue
- Chest pressure
- Dizziness or loss of consciousness
- Feeling out of breath, either while resting or moving around
- Swollen legs and ankles
- Bloating
Types of cardiomyopathy can include:
- Alcohol-induced cardiomyopathy
- Arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia
- Broken heart syndrome
- Chemotherapy-induced cardiomyopathy
- Dilated cardiomyopathy
- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
- Ischemic cardiomyopathy
- Left ventricular non-compaction
- Peripartum cardiomyopathy
- Restrictive cardiomyopathy
How is cardiomyopathy diagnosed
Our care team will meet with you to discuss symptoms, run tests and come up with a diagnosis and treatment plan. This process may include cardiac catheterization, a cardiac MRI, an electrocardiogram or echocardiogram.
Treatments for cardiomyopathy
While the condition cannot be completely cured, physicians can help to manage symptoms and slow progression of the disease. Options may include:
- Lifestyle changes, such as a healthy diet, regular exercise and avoiding the use of alcohol and tobacco
- Medications
- Implanted devices, including pacemakers and ventricular assist devices
- Surgical procedures, including a heart transplant
