The pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) utilizes specialized treatment and equipment when your child is critically ill. Physicians and nurses in the PICU are specially trained in pediatrics, so they are able to provide your child with high-quality care.

The 24-bed PICU at Methodist Children's Hospital features board-certified pediatric intensivists and pediatric intensive care nurses dedicated to improving your child's health. We provide children in the San Antonio area with compassionate care, including respiratory therapy, bedside surgical procedures and advanced radiology.

Our pediatric intensive care services
Our multidisciplinary PICU team uses the most advanced equipment and procedures to care for and monitor critically ill children. We offer a wide range of pediatric intensive care services, including:
- Technologically advanced radiology
- Bedside surgical procedures
- Conventional and non-conventional mechanical ventilator
- Respiratory therapy
- Life support
- Cardiac and respiratory extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)
- Subspecialty physician services for babies with rare congenital conditions
Pediatric transport teams
We also provide transport teams through Methodist AirCare™ to bring critically ill children to our PICU. It is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and includes expert medical crews and transport teams.
Getting to the pediatric ICU
We are located on the fifth floor of the children's tower. You may park at one of our three parking garages or use our valet service. We offer open visitation as long as the patient is in stable condition. Parents of patients must notify the PICU staff of any outside visitors before their arrival.
