San Antonio, Texas — Methodist Healthcare held a ribbon cutting to launch the Methodist Healthcare Critical Care and Specialty Teams, a dedicated medical transport service line designed to extend high-acuity care beyond the hospital and support consistent care during internal and interfacility transfers.

The service includes four critical care ambulances, ground or air transport when appropriate, and dual paramedic and nurse teams trained to care for critically ill or injured patients during transfer — including heart alerts, stroke alerts, sepsis alerts, ECMO transports and major trauma.

“This service is about patient impact, helping ensure critically ill patients receive the right level of care during transfer and reach specialized teams as quickly and safely as possible,” said Susan Kilgore, senior vice president of operations at Methodist Healthcare. “By bringing transport operations under Methodist Healthcare leadership, we’re strengthening coordination and clinical consistency across the transfer process.”

The Critical Care and Specialty Teams program is not a 9-1-1 service and focuses on interfacility transfers to higher‑acuity care, reducing reliance on external ambulance providers and preserving those resources for broader community needs.

Community leaders and partners joined Methodist Healthcare for the ribbon cutting, including elected officials and representatives from South Texas Regional Advisory Council (STRAC), the Consulate General of Mexico in San Antonio and local chambers of commerce. Chanel, Fresca and Lady — Methodist Healthcare’s three Emergency Services Facility Dogs — also attended.
