A birth experience that replaced fear with trust

What began as a fearful return to a hospital became a healing birth experience for Hannah Ruth Carmony, whose care team at Methodist Hospital Stone Oak helped transform anxiety into trust during the arrival of her son, Theodore.

Having a baby is a life-changing experience, filled with overwhelming love, uncertainty and, for some mothers, lingering anxiety. For Hannah Ruth Carmony, 24, the thought of giving birth in a hospital brought added fear because of a difficult hospital experience she had when she was young.

With those memories in mind, Hannah Ruth initially planned to deliver her baby at a midwife-model birthing center, hoping for a setting with fewer traditional hospital interventions and a more personalized approach to labor and delivery.

But early on December 20, everything changed.

“I felt like my baby was coming,” Hannah Ruth said, recalling hours of strong contractions. “I called the midwives. Discussing this by phone at 4 a.m. made communication difficult. They said that my contractions were not following the right pattern. I decided to go to Methodist Hospital Stone Oak.”

Although she was hesitant about entering a hospital setting, her fears quickly began to fade once she arrived.

“Originally, I was nervous that I was not going to be listened to in a hospital setting, but the nurses were amazing,” she said. “I was in lots of pain and asked for an epidural block. The nurses talked to me and my husband the entire time the epidural block was being administered. That was when I knew I was safe there and that they were listening to me.”

That reassurance made all the difference. Hannah Ruth said the nurses validated her instincts and reminded her that she had done the right thing by listening to her body. She also praised her physician and anesthesiologist for helping her feel calm, supported and informed throughout the delivery.

On December 21, Hannah Ruth arrived at the hospital at 4 a.m., and just a few hours later, at 9:01 a.m., Theodore was born.

“The staff at Methodist Hospital Stone Oak got rid of my hospital fears,” she said. “My actual experience was better than anything I ever expected. If we have another baby, it will be at a Methodist Healthcare facility.”

What began as a moment filled with uncertainty ended as a healing experience — one that replaced fear with trust and gave Hannah Ruth the safe, compassionate birth she had hoped for.
