San Antonio, Texas — In honor of April as Donate Life Month, Methodist Hospital Specialty and Transplant raised the Donate Life flag, recognizing the generosity of organ donors, their families, and celebrating the lives saved through transplantation. The Donate Life flag will fly throughout April as a symbol of hope, gratitude and second chances.

The flag‑raising ceremony brought together transplant leaders, care teams, and supporters to honor donors and encourage the community to learn more about organ donation. With nearly 100,000 people nationwide still waiting for a life‑saving transplant, the team emphasized the ongoing need for donor registration.

“Raising the Donate Life flag is a powerful reminder of the lives saved because someone chose to give,” said Kevin Scoggin, Chief Executive Officer of Methodist Hospital Specialty and Transplant. “It also reinforces our commitment to expanding access to life‑saving transplant care for our community.”

Methodist Hospital Specialty and Transplant is nationally recognized for the scale and impact of its transplant program. To date, the program has performed more than 9,000 organ transplants, including:

  • 7,913 kidney transplants
  • 1,096 liver transplants
  • 116 kidney‑pancreas transplants
  • 70 pancreas transplants

In kidney transplantation, Methodist Hospital Specialty and Transplant continues to redefine what’s possible. In 2021, the program became the only transplant center in the United States to perform more than 200 living donor and more than 200 deceased donor kidney transplants in a single year, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS). The program is also recognized as the largest Hispanic kidney transplant program in the nation, as well as the largest living donor and kidney paired donation program in Texas.

Behind the numbers are thousands of patients who now have a second chance at life, made possible by the expertise of local transplant teams and a focus on expanding donor options for the community.
