San Antonio, TexasMethodist Hospital Westover Hills now offers coronary microvascular testing, a breakthrough heart diagnostic technology that is transforming how cardiovascular disease is identified and treated in women.

The addition of this advanced testing is especially significant during Heart Month. According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of women, affecting nearly half of women ages 20 and older, many of whom are unaware of their risk.

Traditional cardiac catheterizations focus on the large arteries supplying blood to the heart. Coronary microvascular testing evaluates blood flow within the heart’s smallest vessels, helping physicians diagnose and treat women experiencing persistent, previously unexplained chest pain.

“Research shows that coronary microvascular disease is more prevalent in women. A female patient may experience chest pain and undergo traditional testing that shows normal large arteries, leaving her without a diagnosis and ongoing symptoms,” said Dr. Jorge Magallon, Cardiologist at Methodist Hospital Westover Hills. “Coronary microvascular testing helps assess the smaller vessels and can provide a clear explanation for persistent chest pain even when standard tests appear normal.”

This innovative technology enables physicians to deliver more accurate diagnoses and targeted treatment for patients who have long been told that their hearts were “normal”. With this new capability, Methodist Hospital Westover Hills further strengthens its role as a leader in cardiovascular care for the far West San Antonio community and reinforces its commitment to providing world-class care, closer to home.
