Knee replacement
Cartilage in your knee can become damaged from arthritis, injury or normal wear-and-tear. If you are experiencing chronic knee pain or limited function, you may benefit from a knee replacement surgery. During this procedure, an orthopedic surgeon will remove the affected cartilage and replace it with artificial pieces.

Candidates for knee replacement surgery
Speak with your doctor to see if you might be a good candidate for knee replacement surgery. Conservative methods, such as physical therapy, weight loss, steroid injections, walking aids and medication may improve pain and mobility.
Some conditions and injuries often resolved with knee replacement surgery are:
- Osteoarthritis (OA) — A degenerative bone disease that wears down the cartilage in the knee that cushions the bones and keeps them from rubbing together
- Post-traumatic arthritis — A form of osteoarthritis that follows injuries sustained to the knee
- Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) — An autoimmune disease that causes swelling in the joints, creating stiffness, pain and loss of function
- Traumatic injuries — Blunt force to the knee from a fall, accident or sports-related injury
