For many, faith-based retreats can leave a lifelong impact. For Marisol Lopez, one church event became a turning point in her life.

As an active member of her church’s retreat team, Marisol built strong connections with the women involved. Debbie Williams, a breast cancer survivor and volunteer at Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan, has made it her mission to uplift others facing breast cancer and advocate for screenings. She shared her powerful story with Marisol and the retreat team one day at an event, but Marisol never thought she’d be in Debbie’s shoes.

Despite diligently performing breast self-exams, Marisol discovered a lump unexpectedly one day. “I knew it hadn’t been there in the past two weeks,” she reflected. “I thought it was just a result of fluctuating hormones.”

She decided to share this Debbie, who encouraged her to get a mammogram, revealing a tumor diagnosed as invasive ductal carcinoma. Although fearful, she found comfort in the unwavering support of Debbie and the retreat team. “I know God placed me in a situation where I would receive both mental and spiritual support after such daunting news,” she said.

Now, inspired by Debbie, she passionately shares her story, encouraging others to seek screenings.
