At Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan, healing goes beyond medicine. The facility is home to several art pieces that aim to inspire and bring forth a sense of hope and community.

Modern Tribe Sculpture (2016)

Artist: Luis L. Lopez

Standing at the corner of McCullough and Brooklyn, Modern Tribe by Luis L. Lopez is a striking 30-foot aluminum sculpture that celebrates the vibrant diversity of the community served by Methodist Hospital Metropolitan. Vertical structures stand tall, each topped with a circle to symbolize wholeness. These circles are each painted a different color, reflecting the diversity and richness of human experience coming together as one. The sculpture serves as a visual tribute to inclusion, healing, and the shared journey of all who walk through the hospital’s doors.

Hearts That Flow Like Rivers

Artist: Jenelle Esparza

To pay tribute to their employees, patients, and the community in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan commissioned an art piece.

Artist Jenelle Esparza interviewed several frontline hospital staff members representing various departments to gather insight into the pandemic from those doing the critical groundwork. This collection of interviews culminated in an art piece, which symbolically acts as an altar to acknowledge a period of significant loss and resilience.

The motif of interlocking hands in each arched frame is an infinite pattern that flows like a river. It represents the sacredness of water, the continuation of life, and how hospital staff carried each other through extraordinary physical and emotional grief. The arch consists of emblems, symbolizing a unique experience shared during the interview process. They express profound personal and professional encounters from within the hospital during one of the most intense periods at the height of our global crisis, exposing the humanity and collective sacrifice this community of healthcare workers undertook.

The piece is located in the main lobby for patients, staff, and guests to see and enjoy.

Thanks to a partnership with San Antonio’s McNay Art Museum, patients, visitors and staff can view copies of paintings adorning a hallway connecting the hospital’s patient tower to the surgical wing. Five art pieces are hung on the wall, representing artists from Pablo Picasso and Diego Rivera to American artist Alice Neel. Each painting is accompanied by a description in both English and Spanish.
