Five decades of care for San Antonio
Methodist Hospital Metropolitan has been serving the San Antonio community for the past 50 years.
San Antonio, Texas — Today marks the 50th anniversary of when U.S. Representative Henry B. Gonzalez dedicated Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan, formerly Metropolitan General Hospital, to serve the downtown San Antonio community. From its humble beginnings, Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan built a strong reputation within San Antonio and the surrounding communities it serves including Alamo Heights, Terrell Hills, and Olmos Park. H.B. Zachry Company designed, constructed, equipped, and furnished the facility. Over the last five decades, Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan has proven to be a leader of clinical excellence and has earned esteemed accolades, including being recognized as a leader in LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality by the Human Rights Campaign for a seventh consecutive year.
Today, Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan has grown to be a 378-bed facility specialized in comprehensive emergency services, women’s care, orthopedics, cardiovascular, weight loss surgery, and rehabilitation services. It is the first San Antonio-based hospital to be recognized by the national accreditation program for Breast Centers and the only certified quality breast center of excellence in South Texas. Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan is also proud to have the only stand-alone birthing facility in downtown San Antonio. Every year, many newborns are welcomed into the world at the Suzell Waller Women’s Pavilion, an accredited Level III Maternal Designation facility dedicated to the health of women and their newborn babies.
“Celebrating Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan’s 50th anniversary this year brings me such joy,” said Greg Seiler, chief executive officer of Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan. “Our hospital is a true testament to what can be accomplished when there is a sincere desire to serve. Every year has truly been a milestone. Despite facing challenges, our incredible staff has always remained committed to our mission. We are honored to continue serving our community and providing exceptional, cost-effective healthcare to all.”
